Penguins in First without Superstar (s)

The pittsburgh Penguins currently sit atop the NHL standings with 18 points. When a fan sees this stat, they probably assume that they would also see Sidney Crosby's name in the top 3 in scoring, with Evgeni Malkin close behind. However, this is not the case. This couldn't be further than the truth. Crosby still has not returned from his concussion suffered on January 5th of last year. Malkin has only played half of the games due to knee soreness. The Penguins are an extremely deep team, as any other team losing their 2 best players would probably put a nail in the coffin. However, due to goalie Marc-Andre Fluery playing extremely well, and scoring coming from numerous players to go along with solid defense, the Pens are leading the way. The scariest part about this whole thing is that they will only get better. They have to be everybody's favorite to win the Cup.

  1. This really is an exciting and good season so far with everyone playing so well even without the stars of the team. My biggest pet-peeve about the team is usually Fluery towards the end of every season but so far this year I haven't been happier! With news of Crosby coming back it will be awesome to add him back to the line-up with such a hot team. Also they were talking on TV yesterday about how at the rate the Penguins have been playing games each week they could be done in early December which I found funny because what a break that would be before the post season starts!

But GO PENS and I hope they keep it up!

  2. The pens are certainly playing well without their best player(s) and it is a tribute to the teams depth. James Neal is playing great hockey and Jordan Staal seems to finally be developing his offensive game a bit. Fleury has been solid in goal and the defense in fron of him lead by Kris Letang has been very good. Combine this with good play from role players such as Dupuis, Cooke, and Vitale the Pens are 8-3-2.
